Random thoughts at 28,000 feet...

As I was sitting in the plain, waiting to take off for L.A. after a really nice weekend with Vicki, I had the opportunity to see some snow flakes, up close and personal, right outside my window. I have never had the chance to really look at one up close. They are kind of cool. I remember studying the crystalline pattern in chemistry classes. It was nice to see then for myself.

The other things that I started thinking about was fate, destiny and free will. Is there such thing as free will? Are all actions preordained?

Now, don't think that I mean in the religious way, I'm talking about the question of whether or not the initial event of the Big Bang set in motion a series of events in which all that we know and are are nothing more than a consequence of the initial event.

Or is it that the initial event included, in it's very nature, an element of randomness that is fundamental, such that while the begining event may be known, and even the ultimate fate of the universe may be known, the intervining events are of a random and unknowable nature. This is what I hope, as it means that while the ultimate fate of the universe may be known, it is not possible to predict actions and events on a small scale of time. Therefore, there is a free will, on a small scale (in which Human activities fit quite nicely), and we are all truly free after all.

Of course all this philosophizing just means I need to get off my ass and figure out what to do with my life.

Maybe I should have argued for the fatalistic view of things.
