Sure, I can do this too...

Check out Malik's game winning shootout goal. Sure, most NHL players can pull that move, but most don't have the balls to try it in a 15 round sudden death shootout to decide a game...against Kolzig too.

Hat Trick on Hat Night...

The Kings were just able to hang onto a win last night. The winner comes from Pavol Demitra's third goal late in the game. Nothing is better than seeing the Colorado Avalanche lose (except watching the Ducks lose), but what made this so sweet was a King scores a hat trick the night McDonalds gives away free hats.

Here's a clip from letsgokings.com member TonySVC:

Demitra leads all other Western Confrence players in points. His linemates Alexander Frolov and Craig Conroy have also scored hat tricks this season.

Fettuine! Fettuine!

I walked into a Fry's Electronics a while ago. Aside from all the PC stuff, I was amazed at the DVD section...a whole aisle of anime. It amazes me how readily available this stuff is now. When I was a kid I became a serious japanese cartoon addict. The terms "anime" or "Japanimation" weren't used yet. I was probably 4 or 5 at the time (about 1976-77). Back then my favorite show was Raideen:

I even had this toy:
raideen2.jpg

At the time I thought it was the biggest toy in the world (hey, it came up to my chest). It's now a collector's item ($100) at the nearby Xtreme Toys store. I wish I kept all that crap.

Another good show was Starvengers:

I guess 1970's Japan was all about huge robots fighting alien invaders. I also watched UFO, Grandizer, etc. All these shows were the same. Taking a break from the non-stop giant robot fighting would bring Speedracer:

The only way to watch these cartoons was on channel 22. See kids, back in the day before cable and satellite, we had UHF channels. Everything above channel 13 was UHF and that meant nothing but PBS stations, public access, and foreign language channels. So I watch this stuff religiously not understanding a single word. I even memorized the theme songs.

As I got older (12-14) anime became an underground scene. With the exception of Robotech:

you couldn't watch anime on TV. You'd go to comic book and scifi conventions and usually find 1 or 2 guys selling bootleg VHS tapes. If you were real lucky you'd find someone who added subtitles with a video editor. Mailorder was a new thing too. During this time I found...

Nausicaa:

Dirty Pair:

Appleseed:

Project A-ko:

Blackmagic M-66:

So it's a little strange to walk into a major store and see hundreds of DVDs available. I guess a lot has changed in the 20 years since I watched this stuff. Netflix carries a lot of anime and of course there's RentAnime.com too. I'll check out a few new titles and now I can try to find the movies that I couldn't get before.

Office Space...

With my sprained ankle prohibiting me from my normal work duty, I've been imprisoned in an office space. Never before have I worked in an office. Never again will I ever work in an office. Now I get to see what happens inside while I'm out busting my ass getting my route done.

It aint pretty.

Now I never claim to be a working class hero, but seeing how things work in the office makes me wonder how we stay in business. Is the multi-billion dollar, multi-national conglomerate I work for riding on their name alone? Apparently not.

From UPSers.com: "In the eighth year of the Annual Best Practice Survey, UPS topped the list in five of the six categories... 'Parcel Shipping & Distribution' worked with Morgan Stanley to analyze over 300 parcel shipping operations. The survey showed an improvement for UPS in each of the six categories from the previous year."

So we're the best, but you'd never know it from the inside. Constant bickering, back stabbing and altering reports are all I see. Since my injury occured in late september, I've had many weeks to witness it all. Sometimes it just freaks me out to see people go through this crap everyday.

The brass wants better numbers so they lay it on the managers. They turn the heat on the supervisors. Continuing the downward shit rolling, the workers get an earfull everyday which leads to low morale. Guess what that leads to....absenteeism, and too much overtime when you do show up for work. Working late hours means pissed off customers who call and complain. And the cycle starts again.

Yeah, I know "I wish I could get all that overtime" is something I hear constantly from people with crappy jobs. But if we are the highest paid in the industry and the vast majority of workers still are fed up with the overtime, maybe the money isn't worth it? Maybe working your job for 12 hours a day is different than mine. Not too sound like an arrogant prick, but the US government did rate my job as being the most stressful job in the country (more than cops, teachers, firefighters, pilots, etc). But I'd still take it over being in management. Asskissing and playing little personal politic games is something I can't do.

Maybe working on the road isn't so bad afterall.

I am nerdier than 29% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!

Good thing there weren't any questions on saving throws or 80's anime.
